Edwardian Ruby and Diamond 18ct Gold Ring

A bright red and lively faceted round ruby, weighing 0.20 carats is the glistening centerpiece of this gorgeous, Edwardian gypsy ring.    

The beautiful Ruby is highlighted on each side by old mine hand cut sparkling Diamonds, weighing 0.20 carats within a star burst design leading to a decorative ridge band.

The style of stone setting (low, burnished, with a starburst frame) is called gypsy star setting.

The anecdote that explains how this name came to be is almost certainly apocryphal and goes like this:

A century and a half ago, wealthy women were loath to travel through the countryside while wearing their piles of jewellery for fear gypsies would come along and snatch stones right from their settings.

A clever lady asked her jeweler to set her gems deep down in the ring, with no prongs, so it was flush with the metal and therefore thief-proof and the "gypsy setting" was invented.
