Description

A beautiful antique Edwardian Emerald and Diamond ring, Circa 1900s.

Finely handcrafted luxurious 18 carat yellow Gold and features one round sea green Emerald and 2 old cut Diamonds which are gypsy set.

The ring has a very clear Chester hallmark.

The ring has wonderful carved detailing.

The overall finish of the ring is wonderful.

The shank is substantial, yet extremely comfortable to wear.

The simple setting enhances the Emerald and Diamond’s natural beauty and brilliance, without distraction.

These rings became popular in late Victorian times when they were given a friendship band as gifts to either young ladies or by lovers and husbands.

The style of stone setting (low, burnished, with a starburst frame) is called gypsy star setting.

The anecdote that explains how this name came to be is almost certainly apocryphal and goes like this:

A century and a half ago, wealthy women were loath to travel through the countryside while wearing their piles of jewellery for fear gypsies would come along and snatch stones right from their settings.

A clever lady asked her jeweler to set her gems deep down in the ring, with no prongs, so it was flush with the metal and therefore thief-proof and the "gypsy setting" was invented.

Emerald is the 35th wedding Anniversary gemstone.
