Description

A beautiful Edwardian hand engraved heart shaped "back and front" locket, Circa 1910.

The front and the back of the locket is beautifully engraved showing fabulous craftsmanship of it's time.

Artfully hand-engraved on both sides with an intricate foliate design.

The front of the locket is has a cartouch which has been engraved with the letters EB.

Topped with a pretty bow, simply lovely.

The locket will hold two images so you can add your own history.

Finely handcrafted in Birmingham and dates to Circa 1910.

To the reverse the makers mark can be seen.

Makes a great gift, steeped in Edwardian English history.

In the late Victorian and Edwardian period, lockets were manufactured with solid Gold fronts and solid Gold backs - to clarify the metal at the front is a sheet of solid gold and the metal at the back is also a sheet of solid gold. The sides, hinges, bails and sometimes the loose frames inside are usually a sturdy base metal that has been gold plated. The reasoning behind such construction is that gold is a soft metal and lockets are by default opened and closed regularly.

Using a sturdier metal than gold meant that they were less likely to buckle or break.
