Description

An exceptional Victorian gold and black enamel portrait locket/pendant with the original photos. This type of mourning jewellery only comes around in our dreams!
 
There are two original photos one of a fine gentleman to one side, he is dressed in a black thick winter coat and a top hat and most interesting for the period he seems to be smiling slightly, he definitely has an air of mystery and mischief to him.  The gentleman could be posing in front of his house.

To the reverse is a very attractive young lady with a lovely expression ob her face is wearing a white lace collar blouse and her hair dressed in a high bun, typical of the era.

The photos are housed in an oval locket with pierced out black enamel frame and finished in a halo of pierced out designed work.

Beautifully handcrafted in 15 carat Gold.

The locket is in exceptional condition and dates Circa 1890.

Originally, lockets offered a way to carry around a small painted portrait of a loved one.

Then, in the 1840's, lockets became a popular way to carry a daguerreotype picture.

Daguerreotype was one of the earliest photographing techniques, requiring the subject to sit for at least thirty minutes (seems like a lot, but this was a great deal
shorter than painting a portrait).

At this time, lockets were quite large and reserved for wealthy aristocrats.
