Description

A stunning Victorian piece of mourning jewellery , the best example ever seen.  This type of mourning jewellery only comes around in our dreams!

This sentimental delight remembers a loved one passed.

The scalloped Gold repousse edging makes a wonderfully captivating frame to the glossy black enamelled panel which is set with a hand carved cameo motif of a weeping willow tree and urn.

The urn and willow captured the imagination of the 18th century like no other mourning symbols.

Having a classical symbol in the urn represents the identity of the Enlightenment and its humanist approach to death, while the willow is a reflection upon the natural world and appreciation of the physical world.

The cameo is set in a halo of twenty six natural Pearls.  Pearls are said to represent the tears of the mourning loved ones of the deceased.

To the reverse houses a rock crystal locket section with a panel of a tribute of a loved ones lock of hair.

This rare piece of mourning jewellery can be worn as a pendant or a brooch which closes with a secure 'C' clasp.

Excellent condition especially for its age with all the original stones and no repairs.

A wonderful Victorian Locket steeped in English history.

The popularity of mourning jewellery during the Victorian era (1837-1901) attributed greatly to Queen Victoria, who, upon the loss of her husband Prince Albert in 1861, fell in to a long depression and spent the next four decades wearing black crepe dresses and mourning jewellery.

As a result, wearing mourning jewellery became highly fashionable.

By the 1830’s, the inclusion of plaited hair or hair works in mourning jewellery and sentimental pieces was particularly popular, allowing loved ones to commemorate and hold close a loved one that had passed away or was far away, symbolising friendship, love and remembrance.

Victorians also believed hair jewellery symbolised immortality.

This brooch/pendant is sure to become a treasured family heirloom and would make a stunning treat for yourself, or special gift for a loved one!
