Description

This very special ring is Georgian, dated 1771.  While the art of mourning is a field unto itself, and many examples are similar, coming across one that is an especially beautiful example is always exciting.

This extraordinary Moss Agate ring from 1771 shows the use of materials above the popular neoclassical symbolism of the time. It’s pieces like this that resonate right through the 19th Century and can track their roots as far back as the 16th Century.

In this example, the band is inscribed GEO WELBORN OB 4 JUNE 1771 AE 50. That is, GEO WELBORN who died JUNE 4th 1771, at the  age of 50. The ring is uniquely lovely as the artist conveys the loss with elegance and simplicity.  The shank is enamelled in black which signifies that the person commemorated had been married.

The centre stone is a beautiful oval Moss Agate measuring Width 10mm Height 12mm.  Moss Agate has a very positive energy, it is said to increase hope and optimism and to improve self-esteem and self-confidence.  The stone is surrounded by twenty three cushion cut Almandine Garnets which have been perfectly shaped and set in hand crimped rub over collets.  Almandine Garnets have excellent hardness, brilliance and durability. Ancient people thought that when a wise man dreamed about Almandine Garnets he would soon discover a solution to all of the mysteries of life.

Rings of this type are highly collectable and are sought after worldwide. The craftsmanship of the ring is superb. It is completely original and is in excellent condition. The shank has wear to the enamel, commensurate with age, but is all original.

Amazing craftsmanship, vision and artistry from a bygone era.
